Yifei Zhang is best known for her dynamic networks of branching ink lines and organic forms on plant-based paper. Her delicate lines extend like neuronal protrusions to form complex intertwining structures which resemble connections and networks found in nature and human society. Zhang’s art works are inspired by biomedical research she conducted on Alzheimer Disease while working as a PhD candidate. She spent hundreds of hours imaging cultured neuronal cells under the electron microscope and in turn became fascinated with the complexity and beauty of neuronal networks. She uses a variety of tools such as calligraphy brushes, bamboo pens, glass droppers, and spray bottles to apply ink and water on paper.

She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her graduation work was chosen to be displayed in Libby Leshgold Gallery. In addition to gallery spaces at Emily Carr University, Yifei Zhang has exhibited in Deer Lake Gallery, Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre, Canada Place, and University of West Washington. The Reach Gallery Museum will be hosting her solo exhibition in 2021.
